How to Diagnose FPS Drops and Stutters

Random tweaks are usually slower than finding the actual bottleneck. Use a repeatable test and identify whether the CPU, GPU, memory, storage or software is responsible.

Watch GPU utilization

If GPU usage is consistently high while FPS is below your target, graphics settings, resolution, GPU clocks or thermals deserve attention. If GPU usage falls sharply during a stutter, investigate the CPU, memory, background processes or game engine behavior.

Check CPU behavior

Look beyond total CPU usage. One heavily loaded game thread can limit FPS even when overall CPU utilization appears moderate. Monitor clocks and temperatures during the same repeatable scene.

Check 1% lows and frametime

Average FPS does not describe every frame. Large frametime spikes can make a game feel uneven. Compare the same section of gameplay before and after each change.

Test one variable

Change one setting, reboot if needed, reproduce the same test and record the result. This makes it possible to identify which change helped and which did nothing.

Do not ignore game updates

A patch can change shaders, CPU load, rendering behavior or network performance. A configuration that helped one version may not help another.
