Counter-Strike 2 PC Optimization: FPS & Frametime
A repeatable CS2 performance baseline focused on CPU/GPU limits, graphics settings and frame pacing rather than questionable “FPS boost” packs.

1. Start with the system baseline
- Verify Windows is using the monitor's intended refresh rate.
- Install a current, stable GPU driver appropriate for your hardware.
- Check CPU/GPU temperatures and clocks during a match.
- Close unnecessary overlays, recording tools and background downloads while testing.
2. Use a performance-first graphics baseline
Start by reducing settings that add rendering work while keeping visibility acceptable. The exact values depend on your GPU and target resolution.
- V-Sync: Off for a low-latency baseline.
- Shadow quality: reduce if GPU load is high.
- Texture/shader detail: test according to VRAM headroom and visual preference.
- Ambient/particle effects: lower when GPU load or frame-time spikes are the issue.
- Keep resolution and scaling consistent during before/after tests.
3. Find the bottleneck
Watch GPU utilization and CPU behavior while reproducing the same scenario. A GPU near sustained full utilization points toward graphics settings/resolution/thermals. Lower GPU usage during a repeatable frame-time spike suggests looking at CPU limits, background work, memory, storage or game behavior.
4. Focus on frametime, not only average FPS
Two configurations can show similar average FPS while one has much larger frame-time spikes. Record average FPS plus a consistent low-FPS metric and frametime behavior. If your overlay provides 1% lows, record them under the same test conditions.
5. Launch options: keep them explainable
Do not paste large lists of old CS launch commands from random optimization videos. Modern game updates can make old commands useless or counterproductive. Add a launch option only when you know what it changes and you have a test that can demonstrate a difference.
6. Mouse and input consistency
- Use a polling rate your CPU and game can sustain consistently.
- Avoid changing sensitivity and polling rate at the same time as graphics settings when diagnosing responsiveness.
- Keep the display refresh rate and FPS-cap strategy consistent during testing.
7. Storage, memory and shader behavior
Keep the game on an SSD when possible. If stutters appeared after a driver or game update, allow any required shader/pipeline work to complete before judging performance. Check RAM usage and avoid testing while memory pressure or heavy disk activity is present.
