Ping vs Jitter vs Packet Loss: What Actually Matters
A low ping number is only one part of an online gaming connection. Consistency and packet delivery can matter just as much.

Ping
Ping is the round-trip time for data between your connection and a destination. Game server distance and routing have a major effect on it.
Jitter
Jitter describes variation in latency. A connection that moves between very different latency values can feel inconsistent even when its average ping looks acceptable.
Packet loss
Packet loss means some packets do not reach their destination correctly. Even a small amount can cause noticeable problems in real-time games.
What you can test
Compare Ethernet and Wi-Fi, stop large downloads/uploads, check other devices on the network, test different game regions and run a packet-loss test to the relevant destination where possible.
Test your connection and route
Use these tools to measure the connection before changing settings. Start with latency, jitter and packet loss; if those look healthy but a specific game server takes a poor route, you can compare the same server with and without a routing optimizer.
How to use them: run the tests with the same connection you use for gaming, note the results, then compare changes one at a time. ExitLag is a third-party routing service and is not guaranteed to reduce ping on every ISP, route or game server.
Do not expect DNS to fix everything
Changing DNS can affect name resolution, but it normally does not magically shorten the physical or routing path between your PC and a game server.
